A dead battery dilemma

Image
A dead battery dilemma With millions of electric vehicles set to hit the road, scientists are seeking better battery recycling methods. A shredded electric vehicle battery can yield recyclable metals, but it is often cheaper for batterymakers to use new materials. PHOTO: ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY The battery pack of a Tesla Model S is a feat of intricate engineering. Thousands of cylindrical cells with components sourced from around the world transform lithium and electrons into enough energy to propel the car hundreds of kilometers, again and again, without tailpipe emissions. But when the battery comes to the end of its life, its green benefits fade. If it ends up in a landfill, its cells can release problematic toxins, including heavy metals. And recycling the battery can be a hazardous business, warns materials scientist Dana Thompson of the...

Musk: Electric Cars Will Require a Lot More Electric Power Than We Currently Have

Musk: Electric Cars Will Require a Lot More Electric Power Than We Currently Have By Bryan Preston 5:42 PM on December 01, 2020 Tesla CEO Elon Musk says we’ll need more electricity to power cars like his. A lot more . Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk said on Tuesday that electricity consumption will double if the world’s car fleets are electrified, increasing the need to expand nuclear, solar, geothermal and wind energy generating sources. Increasing the availability of sustainable energy is a major challenge as cars move from combustion engines to battery-driven electric motors, a shift which will take two decades, Musk said in a talk hosted by Berlin-based publisher Axel Springer. There’s no unicorn energy source or free lunch. Currently, electric cars are primarily powered by coal, natural gas, and nuclear. Those are th...

It started, this whole climate change started as actually part of the animal rights movement, if you want to know the truth. It started with such things as Earth First and spotted owl, all of those issues were tied to climate and environment. They ended up being mixed and melded as time has gone on. But for as long as these people have been attempting to deter and stop progress in America, I have been on the case. Now, one of the things that’s being touted today and has been touted for a long time is clean, renewable energy. And one of the elements of clean, unreasonably, sustainable — you have to use that word — if you use that word right now, you will own many Millennials. That is a word that’s ve...

Here's what's targeted in Colorado's first big environmental bill of the session

Here's what's targeted in Colorado's first big environmental bill of the session Legislative leaders have promised efforts to curtail greenhouse gas emissions. The first big environmental bill of Colorado's 2023 legislative session arrived this week, targeting gas-powered lawn equipment, state investments in fossil fuels and gaps in existing emission-reduction goals. Senate Bill 16, sponsored by Denver Democrat Chris Hansen , largely reboots last year’s Senate Bill 138, which died at the end of the session as a concession to get House Republicans to end a filibuster. A big difference this year, however, is that the bill begins with more focus on incentives, proposing income-tax credits for folks buying electric lawn equipment in the coming years rather than seeking to ban the sale of new gas-powered lawnmowers or leaf blowers. Hansen, who also is running for Denver mayor, said he wanted to try again to take a holistic approach to reducing emissions, seek...

How Al Gore Built The Global Warming Fraud

How Al Gore Built The Global Warming Fraud Although his science is often seriously wrong, no one can deny that Al Gore has a flair for the dramatic. Speaking about climate change in an October 12 PBS interview, the former vice-president proclaimed , “We have a global emergency.” Referring to the most recent UN climate report, Gore claimed it showed that current global warming “could actually extend to an existential threat to human civilization on this planet as we know it.” Al Gore’s overblown rhetoric makes no sense, of course. Yet his hyperbolic claims beg the question: How did this all start? Back in the 1970s, media articles warning of imminent climate change problems began to appear regularly. TIME  and Newsweek  ran multiple cover stories asserting that oil companies and America’s capitalist lifestyle were causing catastrophic damage to Earth’s climate. They claimed scientists were almost unanimous in their...
